Parenting Counseling

Support, Skills, and Connection for the Whole Family

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs we'll ever have—and no one hands us a manual.

Maybe you're wondering:

Why is every request turning into a battle?

Am I too strict? Too lenient?

How do I help my child regulate their emotions?

How do I stay calm when I feel exhausted?

Will it always be this difficult?

Parenting is deeply personal. When our own child is struggling, it can be difficult to know what they're really needing—or to know whether we're responding in the most helpful way.

Beneath all the questions parents ask is one deeper question: How can I best support my child while protecting our relationship? I hear the fear, frustration, anger, disappointment, overwhelm and exhaustion. I am here to encourage you in your desire to be a responsible, loving parent.

Parenting counseling gives you a place to slow down, make sense of what's happening, and learn practical, evidence-based strategies that help you feel more confident and connected with your child.

Why choose parenting counseling with Emmaus

I don't believe in blaming parents or labeling children. Most parents are doing the best they can with the information and support they have. My role is to help you understand your child's behavior, strengthen your relationship, and give you practical tools that fit your family's values. Children's behavior is communication. Together we'll explore what's underneath the behavior so that you can respond with both confidence and compassion rather than simply reacting in the moment.

I come from a large family where caring for babies and children was learned by watching and doing. Not everyone grows up with that model; some parents need to learn basics and be taught with compassion. I remember a new mother who arrived to a follow-up in tears, overwhelmed and ashamed she didn’t know how to bathe her newborn. With calm teaching and support she became a confident, loving parent. That’s what I want for you: skills, confidence, and the reassurance that you are not alone.

Parenting is an ongoing process.

I understand that every child is different, and what works for one child may not work for another. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, we'll work together to understand your child's temperament, your family's values, and the patterns that may be keeping everyone stuck. At Emmaus Counseling you will receive:

  • Compassionate, nonjudgmental support

  • Practical tools such as dynamic routine charts, age-appropriate chores that build responsibility, encouraging language that promotes cooperation, predictable routines that transmit safety, connection strategies, and calming techniques.

  • Skill-building sessions with role-plays, real-life practice plans, and follow-up support

  • Collaborative problem-solving and emotion coaching for both parents and children

  • Resources and referrals when needed (groups, books, community services)

  • Positive Discipline approach: My model emphasizes connection and empowerment, setting goals grounded in your family values, and teaching routines and structures that respect both parental authority and a child’s autonomy.

  • Family-centered and developmentally informed interventions tailored to your child’s temperament, sensitivities, and stage of development.

I help :

  • New parents feeling uncertain or out of their element.

  • Seasoned parents who feel at a loss with one of their children with whom the usual strategies/techniques are not working.

  • Parents of toddlers, school-age children, and adolescents navigating behavior, transitions, or communication gaps

  • Caregivers seeking to build connection, reduce power struggles, and increase cooperation

How Positive Discipline shapes our work

Positive Discipline focuses on connection, mutual respect, and teaching life skills. We’ll create goals based on your family values, develop consistent routines, and use strategies that both maintain your authority and honor your child’s developing autonomy. These approaches reduce conflict, increase cooperation, and nurture long-term emotional health.

Outcomes you can expect

When working with me, you will notice:
